super-high highs

I rate this book 5 stars not because it's perfect, but because I love it. I would give a 5-star rating to any book that contained either "The Kidney-Shaped Stone That Moves Every Day," "A Shinagawa Monkey," OR "Where I'm Likely to Find It" - and this one has all 3! Frankly even the less-than-perfect stories (e.g. "Sharpie Cakes") are, to me, both endearing and interesting. In the interest of full disclosure, I am a huge, huge Murakami fan and would read anything he wrote, even a grocery list. In fact sometimes his novels actually include grocery lists, and I read them with great enjoyment.

Hanalei Bay on Kindle

This is my first purchase on Kindle for PC. I bought it because I heard about the short story, Hanalei Bay, a beautiful place on the north shore of the Hawaiian island of Kauai, which I visited about a year ago. The story is part of this collection.

In another review, I described Hanalei Bay as a haunting short story about a Japanese woman who arrives in Kauai after her son dies while surfing and who returns each year to sit on the beach and sometimes play the piano in Hanalei. A ghost appears for the briefest of moments in the story, but only to two surfers who hitchhiked to Hanalei. More haunting to me still is the vision that suggests that the paradise I visited may be pierced to reveal shark attacks and drownings and worse, maybe, all of which is hard to imagine sitting on its beaches looking out at the water and the sky. The style might be called haunting, too, if it weren't so clean. This was a find.

As for the Kindle for PC form, I was satisfied with the purchase. The quality is good, the price is good. I suspect the original publication in book form was automatically re-formatted to fit the PC screen. It felt strange to have no page numbers, and there were page breaks no printer would have allowed ("widows and orphans").

Vintage Murakami

I should preface this by saying that I have been a huge Murakami fan for years, although I had never gotten around to reading this particular book. Anyway, I was very predisposed toward liking it a lot when I picked it up and was not disappointed. I have to admit that there are one or two stories that struck me as being kind of goofy, with no particular point that I could discern (The Rise and Fall of Sharpie Cakes being perhaps the most egregious example). But the majority of the stories are vintage Murakami - engaging, mysterious, surreal yet written in an almost matter-of-fact voice.

The stories are ordered chronologically, which adds additional interest. The reader gets to trace the development of Murakami's style over the years, and while I felt the best stories come toward the end of the book (the last six stories go by in a blur they are so good), the early stories are great as well.

Very highly recommended.

Great Advise for Women about men!

This book impacted my current relationship greatly! It taught me to just sit back and be taken care of (for once in my life) in a relationship. Instead of thinking "What can I do tonight to get this guy to like me?" before a date, I changed my thinking and ask myself "I wonder what he'll do for me tonight, where will he take me, what will we talk about that interests me, how will he try to make me feel special? What should I wear that makes ME feel good? I wonder if I'LL feel a stronger spark tonight because of how he takes care of me? I wonder if I like this guy, maybe I'll figure it out more tonight...this is exciting!" And when he did these things I simply said, I like that, thank you...no need to return any favors.

I also recommend "Getting to I Do" by Pat Allen. Reading them together has helped me navigate my current relationship and I've never felt happier and more relaxed dating!

It was a helpful book to read about how to weather the ups and downs of playing the "dating game." Which is something I needed after trying to start dating again after a ten year relationship ended.

One thing to note, this book is all about building HEALTHY lasting relationships through the five stages of dating. If you're reading this book hoping for answers, and you're in a casual relationship (i.e., Friends with Benefits, Booty Calls, Unavailable, etc...) stop now... This book will not help you. Read Mr. Unavailable and the Fallback Girl instead.

Great information, not just for single people!

Excellent information. I found some of it a little repetitive, but Dr. Gray really does do an amazing job of explaining how men and women are so different. I think this is really good information for anyone who has ever just been totally perplexed by why a date they thought went great never amounted to anything :) The different stages really made sense to me. And I understood why skipping through some is not productive to a longterm relationship in the end. Great information for single AND married people.

This Book Surprised Me!

Let me start by saying, I had no idea who Simon Spurrier is. I knew Tan Eng Huat's work, and enjoy it, but usually when there's a 'new' author I'm always careful to take a chance. However, the NOW initiative Marvel started really had me excited, so I tried everything from their first few months of new releases, and I was happy I did. I've grown tired of Bendis' writing, and his x-books fell flat for me, so high-profile comics writers are not always a plus. (Sorry, Bendis! I still love your Ultimate Spider-Man if not your team books!)

I got this book thinking "Legion? Who gives a crap about him?" but thought hey, in the spirit of Marvel NOW I'll try it. It ended up being the most captivating read of that entire first wave, and certainly my favorite X-Men book of the bunch. Spurrier's story made me invested in David Haller's quest, and it was the book I least expected to like! I picked up the individual issues as they came out, but am getting the trades so I can pass them around to friends.

This and Brian Wood's X-Men are easily the smartest, most tightly scripted, and most captivating x-books on the shelf. Before these two titles, the only x-book that has maintained my interest over the long course has been Peter David's X-Factor, which is building to a satisfying close.

If you want to try something a little different, I can't recommend the new X-Men Legacy enough!

Powerful and psychologically screwed up side-character gets his own chance to shine.

I think my eyes bulged when I read that Legion was getting his own title. Not that I hate Legion, but...he's not exactly what I'd consider traditional or conventional star material. Especially considering how the last X-Men Legacy run went; though, I suppose it's appropriate to relaunch the title with Legion given who he is. I don't know how the comics industry works, but I can only imagine someone pitching this idea and various editors just groaning at the prospect. Yet Spurrier manages to write him in a way that respects the complicated nature of his past yet integrate some character growth to develop him into a character that can take the spotlight and be true to himself while not alienating the audience. Because traditionally, Legion is one screwed up character. I mean, really screwed up. But with a little sanity to balance him out (at least during the time he's narrating to us), he can tell a great story.

For those unfamiliar with Legion, a little back story should be understood before diving in. The absolute basics are covered in story: He's the omega-level mutant son of Charles Xavier who has a literal legion of powers to draw upon. The problem is that these powers have identities of their own, one for each ability, and they're mostly homicidal. He's not, and he's struggling to control them, and at the start he's basically learning to cope. Until the realizes that Professor X has died, and #$%^ hits the fan.

I think the first six issues are great, if you know a good story is coming up. If not, it might take a leap of faith but you can tell something good is there if you look close enough. Legion is actually somewhat hilarious,and interesting enough to have the spot light on him because we hardly look elsewhere. We do see other X-men but they are written stereotypically...which is fine, since in the end we're just interested in Legion and they're only there to advance the plot. The exception is Blindfold, whose backstory is fleshed out to be rather dark and explanatory of where she gets her odd verbal tic. She, like David (David Haller is Legion's real name, and the one I should be using considering he HATES the name Legion)is rather screwed up mentally and obviously going to help carry the X-Men Legacy title.

The art is something that you have to be told you'll get used to, because it works here. It won't work for most other comics, but with how crazy and erratic Legion can be it just works here just fine. It's not bad, but it's different. Really, I can't describe it well other than calling it unique but fitting. It's less realistic, with sharper edges, and kinda perfect for a tale about someone constantly on the edges of reality. Probably not selling it well.

What gets it a 4/5 is mainly the lack of a clear focus. You get the sense that a major story is at play, but aren't shown it other than having the main villain directly involve himself. You don't know where he's going or what he wants to accomplish specifically, and really only know that he's a bigot with way too much power and little regard for other lives. I also sense that, for new readers, David is interesting but a confusing character. I point that out because Marvel NOW, from what I understand, was to bring in new readers. I don't think that a blatant info dump is necessary, but from my prospective you really didn't get a sense of how BAD it was for David. I'm guessing that's coming up later, and really, while reluctant to give it 5 stars I wish they gave options to reward a 4.5 or something.

Very good all around!

Great series. The cover art really grabbed me and much to my delight the art on the inside was good too. I had never heard of Legion before and I really enjoyed his story. Its a quick read (only 24 issues!), and will keep you sucked in till the very end.

Very smooth, very sexy...

There are people who write erotica and then there are people who WRITE erotica. Risqué is the latter. After a pretty long wait since `Red Light Special' we are taken back to the world that only Risqué can write. It's not just the erotica that makes her work great, it's everything else. How she fits so much into 250 pages is the magic she creates. How good is this book? I finished it in two days. I know, I know, I know, big deal right? Well for me it is Mr. & Mrs. Condescending. SO THERE!

Lyfe seems to have it all. An exceptionally good job, an exceptionally freaky wife, an exceptionally large bank account, and an exceptionally large endowment (and I'm not talking about the Arts). Problem is his woman is more of a man than Hulk Hogan. Not in the physical sense but Payton is `HBIC' and if you question it she'll damn near shoot you. Lyfe is reformed thug and you can imagine that dichotomy between those two. They fight hard, sex harder, and we get to witness it all.

Arri is a voluptuous walking definition of sex who is a secretary by day and a web-cam hottie by night. Her boss? Lyfe. I'm sure you can put two and two together. Risqué is known for her drama and her twists so put on your seatbelt and turn off your airbag. "Hell hath no fury as a woman scorned". The twist is finding out who that woman is. Pay attention grasshopper because the ending is wicked. Risque' continues her special blend of everything in this, her latest novel `Smooth Operator'.

With friends and lovers like these, who needs enemies. Definitely, a tangle web was weaved with these characters in the way the author brought them together. With five main characters, I think sex was the sixth main character in this book, everyone was doing it, and it was used as a deadly weapon.

Payton, Lyfe's wife, wants him to run the New York office of her corporation for a while to oversee things. Her motive soon becomes clear once he is in New York, and thus starts the drama of everyone's life. Lyfe was definitely sexy, and dealing with a crazy wife, it brought out his dark and rough side. Payton was controlling, disgusting, crazy, psychotic, and sick in the head, enough of her. Arri is a provider for her and her nephew, and does what she has to do to survive and pay the bills. With her past, Arri finds herself unable to be close with anyone. So, when she connects with Lyfe, their chemistry was great and is worth the read. Quinton and Dominique's characters defiantly brought an interesting twist to the story.

The first four pages onwards, double wow. What a way to start a book, the moment the story starts, it dives right in, literally. In addition, if you thought chapter one ended with a bang, chapter two with Arri did not disappoint at all. It felt as though the author was showing us what everyone was working with.

I enjoyed this book and it's definitely up there with my taste in books. If you're looking for a morally and sweet romance, this is not the book for you. Also, note to reader, some sex scenes may not be to some readers liking.

Arrielle `Arri' Askew is a single mom employed at Anderson Global by day and moonlights as the Smooth Operator by night. Payton is a demanding, controlling diva that wants what she wants when she wants it and Lyfe has found out he isn't cut out for the demeaning temperaments that his wife likes to exhibit. Reluctantly Lyfe travels to the New York office as Payton bitchily requests for business purposes but upon his arrival, the magnetism that flares between he and Arri is undeniable. Quinton and Dominique King are basically married in name only...the question how long before Quinton's continuous infidelity and disrespect push Dominique into a life of reckless behavior? Anderson Global and its New York employees will never be the same once Lyfe Carrington and his charismatic aura saunters into their safe haven.

The question remains: Will Payton's cruel streak be able to destruct more lives or will her reign of tyranny dissolve like the Wicked Witch of the West? Arri has always been the sacrificial lamb, will she finally be granted a pass with a happiness of her very own? Can the hilariously holy remain holy with a tamborine while breaking bread in the midst of cheaters, murderers, adulterers, manipulators, and a slew of perpetrators? Can a real man maintain his dignity, integrity, and intellect as well as his freedom when he discovers that he's basically sold his soul to the devil?
