one of the best ISEE Prep book out there

one of the best ISEE Prep book out there. Couldn't trust little known companies since I tried Acadian Academics, Test Prep Works, ISEE exam secrets which was a huge disappointment. So glad I tried this one! Lots of practice questions and the level of difficulty is similar to the actual test. I feel like they are actually familiar with the test! I purchased this book after purchasing Peterson, Kaplan, Princeton, McGraw and ISEE for Dummies (books I highly recommend). It's always good to solve verbal section after memorizing vocab books though. (whether wordly wise or vocab workshop)

GREAT RESOURCE!

We bought this book because it looked like it had the most practice for the upper level ISEE, and it did not disappoint! There was so much reading and math practice we didn't even have enough time to get through it all (we only bought the book one month before the test). The math was incredibly thorough, and the reading was quite difficult for my son at first, but the practice really helped him improve his skills. My son ended up doing way better on the test that we expected and got into our first choice school, so no complaints here!

This book really helped my son to prepare for the ISEE test. We are from the UK and were completely unaware of this test and its contents, so this book played an invaluable part in helping to prepare him. He did really well in the end, so we were pleased he was so well prepared. The Tutorverse are great too - I can thoroughly recommend them.

Sano Yoko is the recipient of the Sankei Cultural Award for Children's Literature and the Kodansha Picture Book Award - Judith Carol Huffman, a middle school teacher from Springfield, Ohio, was a lifelong student of Japanese children's literature and culture. She died in 1996.

unfortunate translation of a wonderful book

As a bilingual reader of both Japanese and English, I was happy to find that this wonderfully playful and at the same time complex book was finally translated into English. In the original, the voice of the narrator is often ironic, playful and repetitious, giving the book an incantatory tone. However, the translation of this book failed to capture that. In most places, the wording sounded wooden and dead; in other places, phrases sounded as if words were directly picked up from Japanese-English dictionary. Here is a good example that a book's essence was destroyed by amateurish translation. This is a tragedy. I gave it a "three stars" rating I think that translation, by nature, is a hard task. I would gladly give the orignal 5 stars, but this version of the text, unfortunately, brought down that rating.

A must-read for adults and children alike

What a treasure! This book is familiar to most Japanese people, and it's easy to see why. The creative, simple, even playful flow beckons to the child within all of us. The book really expresses the unique way the Japanese tend to value the quality of being "childlike", and shouts to all of us, "don't take things so seriously!" The simple way the story deals with happiness, love, and death make this a perfect book for an adult to read together with a child. Finally, the excellent translation captures the simplicity and playfulness of the original Japanese version almost perfectly.

heartbreakingly lovely

The remark by Horn Books (above) says the book will not gain many readers in the U.S. - if this were true, it would be a pity and a missed chance to understand and look at the fact of life that is probably the most difficult we have to deal with - passion and loss, love and death. This book, which I know only in Japanese, is lovely and extraordinary. Its story is heartbreaking and it probably will make you cry. But these tears will leave you with a deep, clear new feeling of how precious life is - yours and everyone elses.

There was nothing revolutionary or shocking in this thin guide. It's solid advice and reminders about what is important and what to leave out when doing pitches. I've yet to put his guidance into practice but I will soon and I suspect that I will benefit as a result.

She now writes and speaks widely about conflict resolution and here she demonstrates that depth of knowledge in a very well written book with excellent illustrations by Basra Owais.

Benny is an adventure-seeking lad who decides to play Kings and Dragons, hops on his toy horse and then realizes he needs a trusty knight to assist him. Lacking such a figure among his own toys he breaks a rule and goes to his sister's room, rummages through her toys, and Voila! There is a Sir Bear - his sister's teddy bear. Out to build castles and adventures his older sister Justine intervenes and demands he give back her teddy bear. Benjy is angry and sad, and in his despondency he chats with his toy blue car, admitting his sadness about Justine's anger about his ploy. The blue car suggests a reconciliation and with that sound advice Benjy's ball further suggests that he ask Justine to play together and his toy guitar suggests Benjy also make a gift for Justine to express his heartfelt regret at causing an argument.

About the Author
Since childhood, I was fascinated by conflicts. Watching my peers fight, just about everything, sparked my interest. Why would they fight about such minuscule things? Were there hidden reasons for their quarrels? and most importantly, how did they always find the way to make peace with each other and continue on as friends, until their next big fight..?This curiosity led me, in my adult life, to studying for a BA in Psychology and Communication at Haifa University, and acting as the President of my University's Debating club. Resuming my studies, I joined the VAYOMAR Company (debate.co.il/#!home/mainPage). I lectured all around Israel, teaching children and adults from all walks of life how to overcome stage fright, and acquire effective communication tools.After a few years, I felt there was much more to learn and so I attended Tel Aviv University, where I received my Masters in Conflict Resolution. I'm writing conflict management children's and parenting books. Very Good Lesson for Kids to Learn

"No, It's Mine" by Shimrit Nothman is a fun story that teaches children a valuable lesson. Young Benjy wanted to slay dragons, but he needed a brave Knight to help him. He couldn't find anything in his bedroom that would make a good Knight, so he went into his sister's room to look for something. There, in plain sight, was Justine's teddy bear... perfect for being the brave Knight! So Benjy took Justine's teddy bear, and was having a grand old time pretending he and the Knight were slaying dragons, when Justine suddenly appeared and started to scream at Benjy, insisting he give back her teddy bear immediately. Benjy gave it back, but Justine kept yelling at him until she left the room.

Benjy was sad when he went back to his own bedroom, because he couldn't play with Justine's teddy bear any more. His own toys saw he was sad, and one by one they came to give him advice. Finally, while in bed that night, Benjy decided to apologize to Justine in the morning.

As things turned out, Benjy and Justine ended up playing together, and they were both happy. "No, It's Mine" takes a very common childhood situation and turns it into a lesson on sharing. The point is quite plainly made that things work out better for everybody, if they just cooperate with each other, and respect each other's property. This is a valuable life lesson that every child should learn. Perhaps even some adults could stand to learn that lesson, too! "No, It's Mine" is a good book to have on any child's bookshelf.

Its a great book. My son loved it because it was funny and he was able to identify with the main character. Also a great tool to help me talk with both my kids about sharing.

Makes you think - and rethink

Mitchell offers lucid and honest words to expose so much muddy thinking and imprecise statements of our age. While I may wish to quibble with his apparent suspicion of all forms of authority that ask individuals to take any concept on faith rather than through reason - I believe that every person has to ultimately take some axioms on faith in order to have any material with which to reason - I thoroughly enjoyed Mitchell's work. It has forced me to rethink my own words and to look at existence in a new light. This book deserves to be read and discussed by anyone who wants to think better and speak with more accuracy and authority.

One of the joys of reading is finding an out of print book or an author you've never heard of, and having the book change your life. Richard Mitchell's books are clear, hilarious, fascinating critiques of the decline and fall of Western Civilization. I first found Mitchell's Graves of Academe by accident in the library. I quickly read all his books, including The Gift of Fire, which is excellent. The latter is the only one I have not come to own through used books stores and sales. Unfortunately it is also the most moving and important and the one I most often want to lend out or quote to my students. I am always amazed when I reread Mitchell that, despite years of teaching, I had never heard of him. On the other hand, his ideas and advice are toxic to the educational extablishment and all hypocritical and unthinking aspects of our society, and I can understand why education schools everywhere would eschew him. If I had to recommend three authors to an aspiring teacher, they would be Mitchell, Kozol and Postman, in that order. I normally do not submit reviews, but anything to get this and other of Mitchell's books into other hands (or reprinted) is worth it.

Simple, elegant beliefs in a readable language

I've never read a book quite like this one. It manages to be scholarly but entertaining, educational but entertaining and . . . well, just plan good, cover to cover.
My favourite portion of the book covers Jesus' confrontation with the teachers of the law concerning a woman found in adultery. The author is straightforward in his approach to the situation and, by not bogging himself down with needless pedagogy and epistemology, shows the simple wisom of Jesus and how it can apply to us.
We all should read this.
