Everything a chemistry textbook should not be
By Matt
Horribly written. Painfully disorganized, bouncing from technique to technique and concept to concept at COMPLETE random. Zero photo plates and minimal line drawings that aren't recognizable as anything actually seen in a laboratory. Structural formulas that look like they were produced in MS Word. In fact, the whole ugly layout has this appearance. The $107 price tag must have been a belabored attempt at humor.

Terrible for a real Organic Chemistry Lab Course
By K
This was the first term that the Chemistry department at my school had us use a textbook rather than giving us their own theory and procedures. This book is bad for doing these labs if you want to understand the lab and the techniques. the procedures in it are mostly understandable, but there are bad grammatical errors that make the instruction unclear and confusing. When I tried to read the theory that was written in the beginning of the chapter, I think I might have actually forgotten some of the chemistry that I already had known. That is how badly written it is. I did a lot of these labs before, but reading the procedures in the book made me doubt my own ability because I was not sure whether I had did it right before (even though I had) because I did not know what the authors were trying to say.

Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil: A Comprehensive Introduction, by Bryan Frances

Suffering that is not coupled with any redeeming good is one of our world’s more troubling, apparent glitches. It is particularly vexing for any theist who believes that the world was created by a supremely morally good, knowledgeable, and powerful god. Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil: A Comprehensive Introduction is among the first book-length discussions of theistic approaches to this issue. Bryan Frances’s lucid and jargon-free analyses of a variety of possible responses to the problem of gratuitous suffering will provide serious students or general readers much material with which to begin an extended contemplation of this ancient and contemporary concern.

The perfect size and scope for an introductory philosophy class’s discussion of the problem of evil and suffering, and deliberately crafted to be approachable by all interested readers, Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil is philosophy doing what it does best: serious, engaged, rigorous explorations of even the darkest truths.

The book offers many useful pedagogical features, including chapter overviews and summaries, annotated suggested readings, and eight-eight discussion questions.

Review

In a field filled with atheistic rants and rash theistic rejoinders this book is a breath of fresh air. I know of no other book that offers such a clear, entertaining, and levelheaded guide to thinking about the problem of evil. The arguments are clear, Frances's presentation is engaging, and the key issues are handled in a thorough and careful manner. It will be a valuable text for classes in the philosophy of religion, and will reward reading by anyone interested in these issues.

Gratuitous Suffering Implies God Does not Exist
By Searching the Stars
Bryan Frances’s Gratuitous Suffering and the Problem of Evil argues that, considering the vast amount of human and animal suffering, it is highly unlikely that God exists.

In other words, this book deals with the problem of theodicy, which is justifying the goodness and power of God in face of evil and suffering. This is a standard problem in philosophy of religion. He argues for an atheistic position in this book. That’s fine, just as long as readers know that is his position.

There are some interesting arguments and analogies in the text. You get the sense of an actively thinking philosopher, but one who is often flippant about religious positions. Overall, I thought John Hick’s, Evil and the God of Love was a much better example of a philosopher/theologian at work, and not merely because he comes to a different conclusion.

The style of philosophical writing in Frances’s book is very casual (with the use of lots of slang) and without reference to other scholars. He defends that early on, but it frequently left me without a sense of the positions he was arguing against. There’s simply no reference to the large amount of work by others on this topic.

Additionally, Frances writes by setting up acronyms and his own names for ideas. Thus, the “4-Part conception” of God is used to refer to a theological position he defines on page 18. You have to remember this. Why didn’t he just use “the God of classical theism?” That’s a standard phrase in theology that many people are familiar with. You’ll also have to know what PHOG is.

On page 122, he arrives at the Free Will Defense, historically one of the best of the theodicies. But his first argument here is to argue that determinism means, “it’s not certain that we have free will.” I am not certain there are many scientists or theologians, who in our post-Quantum Mechanics world, believe in hard determinism as a general metaphysical position without major reservations.

I would have liked a more detailed response to Hick’s and Plantinga’s ideas, the position of several process theologians and modern adaptations of the free will defense.

Rumpole and the Penge Bungalow Murders, by John Mortimer

The Rumpole renaissance continues to build, and now the beloved barrister’s many followers have a special reason to rejoice: a sensational full-length Rumpole novel that at last relates the oft-mentioned but never revealed story of Rumpole’s first case, the Penge Bungalow affair. Looking back half a century into a very different world, Rumpole recalls a man accused of murdering his father and his father’s friend with a pistol taken from a dead German pilot. It was this trial and its outcome that put Rumpole on the map and shaped him into the cantankerous defender of justice that readers know and love. This is a must-read for every Rumpole fan and a compelling invitation to new readers.

From Publishers Weekly
Mortimer's beloved barrister, Horace Rumpole, at last tells the tale, hitherto mentioned only in passing, of the Penge Bungalow murders, the case that made his reputation as a defense lawyer decades ago. Simon Jerold stands accused of shooting his father, a bomber pilot during WWII, and an RAF buddy of his father's some hours after a quarrel in which Simon threatened his father with a German Luger. Simon appears headed for the gallows with perfunctory defense from C.H. Wystan, Rumpole's by-the-book head of chambers. Leave it to young Rumpole, an inexperienced "white wig," to see a chink or two in the prosecution's case and step up to Simon's defense, even at the risk of ruffling his supercilious superior's feathers. Subplots include the farcical circumstances that lead the romantically challenged Rumpole to become engaged to Wystan's daughter, Hilda (aka "She Who Must Be Obeyed"), and his introduction to the felonious Timson family, one of whose hapless members he defends in an unrelated burglary trial—which incidentally provides a clue to a key motive of one of the principals in the murder case. If a British airman circa 1942 committing treason in the belief that Hitler was going to win the war isn't entirely convincing, Mortimer (Rumpole and the Primrose Path) never fails to delight.

From Bookmarks Magazine
For fans of this British crime fiction series, Rumpole is a must read. First introduced in a radio play 30 years ago, Rumpole has since populated 12 collections of Mortimer’s short stories as well as a television series. This novel-memoir (the first long piece of fiction starring Rumpole) relates the backstory of the ornery trial lawyer’s success, introduces readers to beloved characters, and answers questions about everything you ever wanted to know about Rumpole, including his predilections for wine, love, and criminal defense. "For anyone unfamiliar with this series," notes The New York Times Book Review, "here’s a charming way to begin."

From Booklist
*Starred Review* One of the longest-running jokes in series fiction has been Horace Rumpole's oft-repeated reference to his triumph in the Penge Bungalow case, which he defended in the Old Bailey "alone and without a leader." Fans long tantalized by references to the great legal case of the postwar years now can have a novel-length bath in it. Rumpole, shocked that the newbies in chambers have never heard of this case (they are even a little vague about the identity of Churchill, he feels), commits it to memoir. Mortimer thus gives us two Rumpoles here: the singularly acerbic old Rumpole, still moving through Chambers and the Old Bailey, but also wryly commenting on young "white wig" Rumpole--acerbic, fond of quoting Romantic poets, yes; but also ambitious ("craven," old Rumpole calls it); and very nervous. A lot of mysteries are cleared up along the way: for example, how the criminal family, the Timsons, first fell into Rumpole's lap; how his wife, Hilda ("She Who Must Be Obeyed"), first darkened his door; and the origin of the term "Chateau Thames Embankment." The Penge Bungalow case itself is a rip-snorter: two RAF fliers living next to each other in bungalows right after World War II are both murdered with a German pistol; the accused is the son of one of the victims. Masterful characterization and a spellbinding plot, filled with the arcane lore and intrigues of the Old Bailey, make this one a special treat for devoted Rumpoleans. Connie Fletcher

Wonderful Reading
By Nina A. Schwartz
It's nice that Mortimer has, at long last, is filled us in on the case cited by so many earlier Rumpole stories. After such a big buildup, however, it's hard to come up with a story to top "Rumpole and the Golden Thread," "Rumpole and the Genuine Article," etc, and in fact, this story doesn't. That said, Mortimer even at not-quite-best, is still much wittier and sharper than most writers, and it's always a great pleasure to read him.
Here an aging Rumpole tells of how he, a "white wig" in the 1950s, assisted his head of chambers, C. H. Wystan, in defending a young man accused of murdering two war heroes. Wystan clearly didn't believe in the man's innocence, and had prepared a half-hearted defense that outraged Rumpole. We already know from other stories, that Rumpole somehow got control of this case. But how? And how could he possibly win it?
Very enjoyable reading. Follow it up with the even better "Rumpole and the Reign of Terror."

Mortimer takes his own bait and attempts to write the story--and it's good! I was disappointed when I first read it ...
By Sandy McIntosh
As Sherlock Holmes always alludes to his unwritten stories ("The Giant Rat of Sumatra" etc.) and makes them tantalizing because they, being unwritten, could be more sensational than any ever presented before, Rumpole has always dangled the Penge Bungalow Murders before us. In this novel, Mortimer takes his own bait and attempts to write the story--and it's good! I was disappointed when I first read it some years ago. But rereading it, I've concluded that he (Mortimer/Rumpole) won the prize. And, of course, it is always wonderful to read a book and be in such good company.

An answer to the question asked by mystery fiction readers.
By J. Lesley
And what, you may ask, is the question I'm talking about? Here it can only be to ask author John Mortimer what happened in the Penge Bungalow Murders. At long last, we have his answer.

If you are a fan of the Rumpole of the Bailey mystery series, you have spent years and years wondering about the case Horace Rumpole uses to define the beginning of his career in representing defendants in criminal cases. Throughout the many books we readers have been given hints of what that case involved, glimplses into how it changed Rumpole and his career in chambers at Equity Court. Now, in this volume, Rumpole decides to write his memoirs and we are given the details of the Penge Bungalow Murders where Rumpole appeared alone and without a leader. How this all came about and what the outcome of it all was makes for a very entertaining story.

The story takes place in the early 1950's when the happenings of World War II are still fresh in the memories of those involved in that horrific conflict. A group of men who served together as combat pilots get together for a reunion of sorts. When the next day dawns, two of the men are dead and the son of one of those murdered is accused of the crimes. Rumpole must learn his way around a criminal courtroom very quickly if he is to save Simon Jerold from a guilty verdict and a date with the executioner.

This was a very interesting story for me, not so much because it is a good mystery (it is rather a weak story), but because it put all the characters I have come to associate with Rumpole in their proper places. It filled in the background for Rumpole himself, gave me information about him as a young man and a young lawyer. It detailed how Hilda became not just involved with him, but married to him. I've always known that Rumpole and Hilda were not exactly a match made in heaven, now I understand how their partnership came about. It was also nice to find out that Rumpole had friends, both male and female outside the law profession, before She Who Must Be Obeyed came on the scene. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the story to complete my knowledge of a fictional character I've "known" for many years.

From Booklist
Gr. 2-4. Marvin's not sure whether he's turning into a girl, whether he's just imagining what it's like to be a girl, or whether he's having a nightmare. Is he weird to want to play hopscotch and to wish he could wear sparkles on his clothes? As in the other easy chapter books about Marvin, Sachar writes for beginning readers with a comic simplicity that is never banal. Here he gets a lot of fun out of the identity confusion, and kids will love the frankness about grade-school gender wars and social taboos. There are no neat answers, but a lot of droll questions, including "What's normal?" The cover, with Marvin staring at a girl's reflection in the bathroom mirror, will draw kids right into the farce of the story. Hazel Rochman

Review
"Kids will love the frankness about grade school gender wars and social taboos."--Booklist.

From the Inside Flap
Will kissing his elbow really turn Marvin into a girl? Casey Happleton claims it's so, and Marvin starts to believe her after his lips "accidentally" brush his elbow.

Marvin Redpost #3 is Fun!
By A Customer
I have read all of the Marvin Redpost books, but I liked Is He a Girl? best because it was very fun and suspenseful. It is a fun story because Marvin thinks he is a girl but he doesn't tell his friends. He believes that he is starting to like girl things but I think that there is no difference in girl and boy activities. I think Marvin sees this too. I think this is a fun book for eight or nine year olds to read and younger kids to listen to.

Funny Adventure
By A Customer
I'm Ceci. I gave this book four stars because it was very funny, mysterious, and it made me keep on reading. I didn't give this book five stars because the ending doesn't really answer some questions in the book. Some parts of it made me laugh until milk came out of my nose. Kids: DON'T TRY THIS AT HOME!!...Altho you SHOULD probably buy it.

Marvin Redpost: Is he a Girl?
By A Customer
I've read the book twice. Great book. Casey tells Marvin that if you kiss your elbow, you will turn into a girl. At first, Marvin doesn't believe her, but when Marvin kisses his elbow, he thinks he really is turning into a girl! Very hilarious! If you like books where the character thinks that they are something else than what they really are, then you'll love this!

Great book to get started on acting basics
By smart_monkey5
This is a really well written book. It's not written in the standard way where it lists what you have to do to be an actor; it captures attention the way it's written (a play script). Some parts leave you a little confused, but reading them again carefully does help, as well as the examples the author provides.

Java Message Service: Creating Distributed Enterprise Applications, by Mark Richards, Richard Monson-Haefel, David A Chappell

Java Message Service, Second Edition, is a thorough introduction to the standard API that supports "messaging" -- the software-to-software exchange of crucial data among network computers. You'll learn how JMS can help you solve many architectural challenges, such as integrating dissimilar systems and applications, increasing scalability, eliminating system bottlenecks, supporting concurrent processing, and promoting flexibility and agility.

Updated for JMS 1.1, this second edition also explains how this vendor-agnostic specification will help you write messaging-based applications using IBM's MQ, Progress Software's SonicMQ, ActiveMQ, and many other proprietary messaging services.

With Java Message Service, you will:

  • Build applications using point-to-point and publish-and-subscribe messaging models
  • Use features such as transactions and durable subscriptions to make an application reliable
  • Implement messaging within Enterprise JavaBeans (EJB) using message-driven beans
  • Use JMS with RESTful applications and with the Spring application framework

Messaging is a powerful paradigm that makes it easier to uncouple different parts of an enterprise application. Java Message Service, Second Edition, will quickly teach you how to use the key technology that lies behind it.

Amazon.com Review
The Java Message Service (JMS) provides a way for the components of a distributed application to talk asynchronously, or for welding together legacy enterprise systems. Think of it as application-to-application e-mail. Unlike COM, JMS uses one or more JMS servers to handle the messages on a store-and-forward basis, so that the loss of one or more components doesn't bring the whole distributed application to a halt.

JMS consists of a set of messaging APIs that enable two types of messaging, publish-and-subscribe (one-to-many) and point-to-point (one-to-one). The highly lucid explanation of the ways in which these work makes the technical content a lot more approachable. In practice, however, Java Message Service is still a book for Java programmers who have some business programming experience. You need the background.

After a simple JMS demonstration in which you create a chat application using both messaging types, the authors dissect JMS message structures, explore both types in detail, and then move on to real-world considerations. These include reliability, security, deployment, and a rundown of various JMS server providers. The appendices list and describe the JMS API, and provide message reference material.

Considering the complexity and reach of the subject matter, Java Message Service does a great job of covering both theory and practice in a surprisingly efficient manner. It's easy to see why JMS has become so popular so quickly. Recommended. --Steve Patient, Amazon.co.uk

Make sure its the same version as the print -- 2.0 or better
By Sedulous
The print version is the second printing and is very helpful and almost up to date.

The Kindle edition, however, and even the "upgrade" from Oreilly should probably be avoided. The Kindle edition is still version 1 (you can tell because the table of contents are different, as well as the intro). You might assume the OReilly edition would be current, but my "upgrade" in late July of 2013 certainly wasn't.

I definitely would not buy this product again (or the first time, had I more carefully looked). Amazon and OReilly are not doing anyone a service by not keeping the Kindle versions and OReilly downloadable versioins up to date with the current print edition.

The least bad book on Messaging
By Dimitri K
Java Messaging is confusing. Not because it is too complicated, but because it is never clearly explained. Usually there is a lot of marketing in books and not enough substance. I have read 5-6 books on Messaging, and this is the first one containing all necessary information. It is not always clearly written, but at least it is possible to understand some important topics.
The one important topic, which is not clearly explained, is synchronous vs asynchronous. It seems that the authors call "asynchronous" every application if it has more than one thread. By carefully reading this book it is possible (though hard) to understand why messaging is asynchronous. It is because the process consists of two steps: sender->server and server->receiver, and the first step does not wait for the second one to complete. However, each one of those steps is synchronous by itself, because they wait for conformation.

This was a sort of indicator for me, because from other books I could not figure it out. So I recommend this book, and even give it 5 stars, because this book is probably the best (or least bad ) of all available books about JMS.

The Java Message Service explained
By Robin T. Wernick
I have just spent the last ten months of my life looking at the messaging features on Windows and Linux. The Java Message Service is the only one of the three running on Windows and Linux that is cross platform. It is a thorough design that will not leave your information hanging in limbo.

This book was published in 2009 when the standards for writing computer books were much higher than in the previous decade when the Windows and Linux specific references on messaging services were detailed. So you will have a much smoother introduction with this book than for the others.

My recommendation is that you use the Java Message Service unless performance is a high priority. Java is well known to be ten or more times slower than the C++ engines in the Windows and Linux specific messaging services.6

In my case I needed to exceed 5 million data blocks per minute so I opted for the C++ versions. However, I spent months of time building and testing code from the snippets in the other reference books while trying to reverse engineer them into a complete understanding of the process. It seems that using services has become a lost art. I wish the other references had the smooth introduction of this book. It could have saved me weeks of valuable time.

HCISPP: This book is all you need to pass!
By Rick Parrott
I took and past my HCISPP (ISC2) certification. I used several books, but this one is far and about the best. It was complete, interesting and motivating. Sean Murphy know what he's talking about.

Should you be studying for the HCISPP certification, this book is all you need.

Excellent - this book covers all the bases!
By Justin W Armstrong
An excellent book. I really enjoyed the way the material is developed. Unlike many books of this nature - where I find there is a lot of fluff - I thought that this book was dense with information and every page had relevant and interesting points. My copy has lots of underlining now, as well as tabs marking important areas that I will re-read. It's a great reference, very thoroughly researched.

Highly recommended book for preparing for the HCISPP®
By William Diederich
Excellent book and great study material for the (ISC)² HCISPP® - HealthCare Information Security and Privacy Practitioner exam. I only had 8 days to study for the test, and three days were spent taking the (ISC)² classroom training, which left only 5 for self-study. I ordered Sean's book a week ago, got it last Friday, and read it cover-to-cover over the weekend. It's a great supplement to the HCISPP® CBK. The book covered a lot of ground in a readily digestible format, in some ways it was better than the CBK. At a minimum I recommend reading them in tandem. In summary, I highly recommend this book, particularly if you're planning on taking the HCISPP®. And yes, I passed the exam last night. Thank you Sean!!!
