Spicy and Fun

Say Uncle is a quick read filled with insta-love, family drama, and some of the spiciest love scenes I have read in a while.
The H and h meet while in flight to Vegas to confront different family members, low and behold her mom has married his brother. Instant attraction and sexy forbidden love ensues and in the end the H and h find their HEA.
Some of the secondary plot and characters came off as 2 dimensional and clichéd angst, however the relationship between the H and h more than make up for it .
I highly recommend this book if you are looking a for a quick, hot and spicy interlude.

CM Steele went all out with this book! The plot was pumping, the characters were intriguing, and the chemistry was HAWT! I loved this book, I can't make it any more simple then that! It was short and dirty with a twist I never saw coming!
Dean was the most over the top Alpha she has ever written!
Angel was the sweetest and sassiest of her heroines and I instantly loved her!
Go on give this one a go and Say Uncle ;)

So,this was awful. I thought this would be good by the description given but holy shot was it a waste.
I understand these smutt books (what me and my friends call them) are not going to be all written like Shakespeare but this was not even a readable level.

Just don't waste your time.

This book is based on the real-life account of an ordinary boy’s extraordinary journey to adulthood in Cambodia after the U.S. left Indochina in 1975, taking us through genocide, battle, the sorrow of loss and the discovery of all-encompassing love.

Writing this book entailed countless interviews and numerous journeys with Sinarth over three years visiting places from his past. The result is a story of Sinarth’s life as an emotional interpretation, from childhood through to adulthood. From this perspective, his perception of events was often in conflict with the historical reality. The recollections of these incidents are tempered by time, combined with the Buddhist approach Sinarth learned later in his life. This gave him the tools to evade overwhelming trauma, by remembering negative events as positive and skewing memories.

An important note is that many separate, though very similar, characters were involved in Sinarth’s life at different times over the forty years covered in this book. For the sake of brevity and through use of poetic licence, I have often combined several people into one character. Many incidents of violent battles, of love and genuine care, I have merged into single events. I have created metaphors for various emotional responses to real situations, inventing scenes at times to communicate those feelings. These aspects are woven together into a single tapestry to tell the story.

Hopefully, this book sheds light on Sinarth’s life’s journey and serves as a cautionary tale, that it could have been any one of us through happenstance placed in his situation. His story is representative of events experienced by many Cambodians, each story comparable, but every Cambodian completes a different journey.

Sinarth is a truly remarkable read: a vivid biography of one boy soldier’s life of horror and hope during Pol Pots regime of genocide from 1975 to 1992. Karl Levy’s lucid retelling of Sinarth’s sudden transformation from a happy, river swimming child to one caught in the middle of Cambodia’s chaotic horror. Two million Cambodians, forsaken by all nations in the world, except Vietnam, were lost to Pol Pot’s Marxist revolution for the sake of revolution.
You’d expect Sinarth’s major struggles (he was wounded thrice, blinded and lost a leg to a landmine), tiny victories, tragic and sudden luck amidst this madness would be a depressing story. Instead Levy has turned this biography story into one of hope and beguiling beauty. It's told in the vivid Buddhist embrace of Sinarth's recollections.
The biography is both a pragmatic history lesson and a poetic meditation on hope, reincarnation, a fallen childhood and the simple and beautiful twists fate brings us.
A book like this, one that can embrace the hope of a single individual, in face of overwhelming odds and horror is an inspiration. Highly recommended.

I couldn't put this book down, devouring it within a few nights. Stunning, bold and colourful. Sweeping landscapes woven together with ancient myth, spirituality and history. Touching on politics and power, explaining the maneuverings of the forces and people that be, in a way that framed and made sense of things that are, and that happen. But all told through the eyes of a boy living an everyday life without this knowledge or perspective. This book will capture you in a way you had not suspected, and catapult you into 1970's Cambodia. I can't say more. You will understand when you read it. A story for everyone.

Reading this, I think my heart was broken and mended many times over. Hard to describe, yet full of hope. A must read. Five stars from me!

The life story of Sinarth is captivating. The backdrop of Cambodia's fight to survive the Khmer Rouge through a child soldier's eyes is moving and Karl's writing takes you there and immerses you in the jungle right alongside Sinarth. The story is great, the writing even better.

Okay, but figure-drawing procedure is not clear

I'm a scholar currently researching different techniques throughout history for drawing the figure. I bought this book because it was relatively inexpensive and it was originally published in the 1920s. The book does not provide a clear, systematic procedure for drawing the figure as do some instructional books. For example, in Andrew Loomis' "Figure Drawing For All It's Worth" he starts you off with basic body proportions, then proceeds to teach you how to draw a manikin in different poses, then proceeds to cover bone and muscle anatomy, then covers drawing the figure in perspective. Interestingly, this book does cover those topics, but in a very sketchy fashion. The main impression you get after reading this book is to practice a lot! For the time it was probably good. But there are much better options nowadays, so unless you're a scholar like me (researching figure drawing techniques), you'd be better off with Loomis, Vilppu, or the Foster drawing books.

Basic Figures

I actually like this little guide, because it's an interesting look at the past.

This *very* slim book doesn't have a lot of pages or sketches, only 23 pages have artwork, yet I'm still somewhat fascinated by it. It's proof positive that the basic shapes commonly used in figure construction today haven't really changed in quite some time. The cover art depicts these basic shapes nicely. Originally released in 1929 as How to Sketch from Life, I think Dover was very smart to re-title this the way they did.

Still, I really only recommend this for curiosity's sake, as a nice little blast from the past. If people are looking for books geared towards today's beginners, I definitely recommend Jack Hamm's Drawing the Head and Figure as an effective place to start.

Good start to learn parallel

This book is a good start for anyone that had done quite a bit of programming and is confident in their abilities to program traditional non-parallel programs and wants to learn parallel programming.

Good intro and review of material you will have learned in any computer architecture course in first chapters and reasons why you should learn parallel programming.
In later chapters you learn about task-parallelism vs data-parallelism in learning to rewrite serial program for parallel. The two main types of parallel systems, shared-memory, and distributed-memory are covered and explained.

MPI is used for the distributed-memory programming. Pthreads and OpenMP is used for the Shared-Memory programming examples. Examples like the Trapezoid Rule and sorting algorithms that lend themselves to parallel programming are demonstrated using MPI, Pthreads and OpenMP. There is also the pi approximation example using alternating series that I remember coding in my first programming course and wondering why it was so slow. It's used in the book to warn of the dangers of improperly scoping variables in parallel blocks. MPI does seem to be favored over the other two for some reason that I didn't get though. OpenMP seems to be the easiest to use and works out of the box on Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X with little to no extra work too so I don't know why the author didn't start off with OpenMP first. You'll need to be running Linux to be able to easily follow along with all the examples in the book if you are a hands on person like myself and want to actually compile and run all the example yourself. On Windows,to build MPI programs,you need the Windows HPC Server 2008 SDK installed. You can run the Pthreads examples on the Mac too but on Windows you'll need to install the Unix for Windows. I did get the sample code to work pretty easily using OpenMP. All the examples were text based it was also easy to time them and verify that the parallel version of the programs were faster. It would've been nice to see some graphical examples but I'm guessing OpenCL, CUDA or some other API is better suited for that since I've seen graphical examples using those API's. The final chapters does provide some guidance to which API to choose and their strengths and weaknesses though.

Since the book is intended for self-study it sure doesn't provide much help on setting up your development environment for parallel programming and seems to assume you'll figure it out on your own. Also, no answers were provided for any of the end of chapter problems which would really be helpful for self-study. The book website does provide some excellent slides to go with the book though.

Finally, parallel programming with GPU's seems to be gaining quite a bit of popularity lately but this book seems to totally ignore the topic except to refer you to other books on the subject.

A very introductory Introduction

I bought this book for a dual purpose: To use in a post-grad class I am taking, and to help me build a distributed systems that I am currently developing. The book is pedagogically exquisite. The presentation and explanations are ordered, logical and non-assuming, and that is where this books shines - and probably why it is getting all the good reviews here and elsewhere. However, the book stands very short of being practical to anything but the simplest of applications - compare it to other books that have similar titles, even with the word introduction in the title and you immediately see the difference. Having said that, I think this the best place to start, it the most approachable introduction to the subject, but in my opinion, it could have accommodated more content either on the design and analysis of parallel algorithms or on the details of implementing more than plain vanilla concurrent solutions.

Good place to start

I am a first year graduate student with no computer science background, other than one class I took five years ago on scientific computing where we used fortran and focused on writing simple programs to solve simple physical science problems. I am working in theoretical chemistry/physics and required to program extensively. One area we are focusing on is programming in parallel to get better performance. This text has been invaluable to me as an introduction to the field of parallel computing. While not complete self-contained (he states in the introduction that it is assumed the reader has taken an introductory computer science course) it is not hard for one mostly unfamiliar with computer science terms to come up to speed. His explanations are clear and concise and the examples he expounds clarify the topics masterfully. The exercises are reasonable and well thought out to help the reader gain a better understanding of how to efficiently program in parallel.

One particularly elucidating example for me, which he comes back to more than once throughout the text, is that of computing a sum. In the first chapter he uses this example to show that substantial speedups can be obtained by not just writing the program to run in parallel, but making the best use of resources. As a novice to computer science this was one my "ah-ha!" moments I had while reading this book and working through the exercises. This will forever be an invaluable addition to my library, and I highly recommend it for the uninitiated.

The only drawback is that it is written with the C language in mind, we still use fortran77 for several reasons, though this was only minor. With a freely available online text on C and other references on MPI and openMP in fortran I have been able to make a smooth transition for the work that I do. So even if you don't know C, or use it, this is still a useful source and reference.

On May 11, 1911, the New York Public Library opened its "marble palace for book lovers" on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. This was the city's first public library in the modern sense, a tax-supported, circulating collection free to every citizen. Since before the Revolution, however, New York's reading publics had access to a range of "public libraries" as the term was understood by contemporaries. In its most basic sense a public library in the eighteenth and most of the nineteenth centuries simply meant a shared collection of books that was available to the general public and promoted the public good. From the founding in 1754 of the New York Society Library up to 1911, public libraries took a variety of forms. Some of them were free, charitable institutions, while others required a membership or an annual subscription. Some, such as the Biblical Library of the American Bible Society, were highly specialized; others, like the Astor Library, developed extensive, inclusive collections. What all the public libraries of this period had in common, at least ostensibly, was the conviction that good books helped ensure a productive, virtuous, orderly republic-that good reading promoted the public good.

Tom Glynn's vivid, deeply researched history of New York City's public libraries over the course of more than a century and a half illuminates how the public and private functions of reading changed over time and how shared collections of books could serve both public and private ends. Reading Publics examines how books and reading helped construct social identities and how print functioned within and across groups, including but not limited to socioeconomic classes. The author offers an accessible while scholarly exploration of how republican and liberal values, shifting understandings of "public" and "private," and the debate over fiction influenced the development and character of New York City's public libraries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.

A Must For The Gifted

In the realm of education, there exist relativly few resources that match this thick faux marble book in terms of it's coverage. I must grant that the information in the forward about the paradigm of evolution through common descent is not just old, but that it is clearly out of step with what the Genome project has confirmed about the Out of Africa theories. Oh yes, and the label applied to Homo Habalis, "1490 Man" is a cue alone to the age of this volume. But please forgive its anachorisms. This was, and remains a ground-breaking publication for Readers Digest, or any house for that matter, simply for all of the fields that it covers in such and interesting and lucid narrative. I started reading this at the age of 5. I can only hope that there is something comparable in the publishing world that would amount to an update on this. The Universe in a Nutshell by Hawkings is not enough. Get this for your kid, today!

The Greatest Publication ever!

This great book, filled with fascinating pages oh history and historical figures, is a must for everybody. I have been using this book for many years now and it has helped me in school work and projects a great deal. The Last Two Million Yars is an in depth book with excellent pictures and wonderfully presented information. This is definately a must!!! C'est très bon livre!
