About the Author
Dr Keeley Crockett is a Reader in Computational Intelligence in the School of Computing, Mathematics and Digital Technology at Manchester Metropolitan University. She gained a BSc Degree (Hons) in Computation from UMIST in 1993, and a PhD in the field of machine learning in 1998 entitled "Fuzzy Rule Induction from Data Domains". She has been teaching within the field of database systems and data engineering for 14 years to both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is a member of the Intelligent Systems Group which has established a strong international presence in its research into Conversational Agents and Adaptive Psychological Profiling including an international patent on "Silent Talker". She has published over 50 refereed conference papers and journal articles in major international conferences and journals. She is the current Chair of the IEEE Women into Computational Intelligence (2012) and a senior member of the IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Steven Morris completed his Bachelor of Science and Ph.D. from Auburn University. He has taught courses in Database Design and Development, Database Programming with Advanced SQL and PL/SQL, Systems Analysis and Design, and Database Management at the graduate and undergraduate levels at Middle Tennessee State University. He has many years of experience consulting on a database projects across a broad range of industries. Dr. Morris has published numerous professional articles and has served on the review boards of several journals. Peter Rob has 32 years experience teaching file systems, database systems design, database design, database applications development, and more. Peter's real-world experience includes two years as a Director of Operations at an aviation chart company, 20 years as a consultant for hands-on operations systems analysis/development and database systems design, and 15 years experience as a statistical quality control systems analysis and systems/applications developer. Carlos Coronel is currently the Lab Director for the College of Business Computer Labs at Middle Tennessee State University. He has more than 29 years of experience in various fields as a Database Administrator, Network Administrator, Web Manager, and Technology Specialist. He has taught courses in Web development, database design and development, and data communications at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

I loved the the last edition, I would not dare miss the new lol! Thank you. This book will take you from Beginner to Advanced Linux Concepts. I am a Linux Engineer and I can't say how much of a blessing this book has been to me. It has literally saved my butt quite a few times! Thanks Wale!

For beginners, and for people who have only limited experience This book is best in the sense that it slowly makes you comfortable with Linux concepts without inhibiting - the author uses wit and makes it very readable and personal. It is not just a how-to book but why-so book too.

Warning - The title is a lie.

The title of this book is a lie. And in the first few pages, the author openly tells you so. It says it's for "beginners," but it is actually written for server admins who are already familiar with Microsoft server administration but who want to dabble in or learn Linux. They actually say in the first few pages they assume you are already a "power user" with such software. Stupid: Say a book is for beginners, then assume your readers are already power users with similarly purposed, expensive software solutions. Why would an author write a book for "beginners" who want to learn free, open-source software, while assuming their readers are already familiar with expensive, Microsoft proprietary software? Yeah, I don't know either, but that is the, um, misguided, perspective they took with this book. They say the reason is that they didn't want to write a book "for dummies" where you just learned what to click or type here and there without knowing the why behind it, but their result is just the opposite of what they say they intended. If you assume your reader is already familiar with the concepts and the "why" with other similar software, then you don't apparently feel the need to really explain the why with the software your teaching. In truth, they do explain the "why," just not the "why" you really need as a beginner. They explain the "why," only in relation to the Microsoft software (i.e., Microsoft server software does it this way, here is why Linux does it differently and how it is better...) Problem is, if you're a beginner trying to learn the free software before shelling out the money for the Microsoft products, you need the underlying "why" and "how," not just a why in relation to how other similar software solutions do it. And why assume that a book "for dummies" would necessarily have to just teach "what to click or type here or there" rather than explaining the "why" anyway?? Why couldn't a book "for dummies," or true beginners, explain the fundamental "why's?" It may seem harsh to leave only one star, because the book could be far worse. If they didn't lie to you, and you are not a true beginner, the book is useful. Otherwise, you'll just feel angry they couldn't actually teach it the way a true beginner needs it taught. But, lying up front, in the title of the book itself, is a pretty fatal flaw in my view. It simply doesn't serve the purpose it set for itself. It is not a guide for beginners.

Starred Review. Grade 5-7–Krull fulfills the promise of the outstanding previous volume in this series, Leonardo da Vinci (Viking, 2005) with this follow-up. Writing in a style aptly described in the blurb as juicily anecdotal (a tone reflected in Kulikovs witty illustrations), she offers a multifaceted portrait of a genius who was both brilliant and several slices short of a loaf, capable of revolutionary insights into science but also rude, jealous, and secretive. Along with presenting lucid, animated descriptions of Newtons major achievements, from calculus and the laws of motion to the reflecting telescope (a cool new toy that earned him instant election to the Royal Society), the author carefully takes on such speculative topics as his religious beliefs, his homosexuality, and the possibility that his emotional imbalance was a result of poisoning caused by his obsessive alchemical experiments. Though Krull gives Newton more credit than he probably deserves for validating the scientific method, in general her assessment of his stellar position in the history of science is right on target.–John Peters, New York Public Library

Engaging in limited speculation about Newton's personality (Did he have Asperger's syndrome or suffer from mercury poisoning?), Krull recounts Newton's lonely childhood, his penchant for quiet reflection, and the difficulties that led to his feuding with other scientists. The lively, conversational style will appeal to readers; Newton comes off as disagreeable and difficult, but never boring. Krull also does a credible job explaining several of Newton's complex theories^B. She offers no documentation, but she appends a list of books and Web sites for those who want more facts. Kulikov's humorous pen-and-ink drawings complement the lighthearted text of this fascinating introduction, which will appeal to both would-be scientists and children in need of a quick-to-read biography. imperfect book

I bought this book for my 9-year-old, and I read it, too.

Sir Isaac Newton is an interesting topic. I would certainly encourage children to find out more about him.

However, this book has many sentence fragments and other grammatical errors. I found the poor writing to be very distracting from the content of the book.

Also, the book contains a discussion of whether or not he is homosexual. I really think that discussions of a person's sex life should be left out of biographies for elementary and middle school students.

I like science in the way that I like foreign cars. It's not something I'd usually focus my brain on, but I'm willing to give it some thought should the need arise. As a child, however, my heroes were not scientists. Scientists, I would have told you, are dull as dishwater human beings who never had a poetic or romantic thought in their lives. They were, for me, the epitome of dull dry brilliance. Trust Kathleen Krull then to write about a fellow who manages to prove my personal stereotypes both right and wrong at the same time. You might be able to make a case for Isaac Newton having never had a romantic thought in his life. But dull? Honey, this guy was so wham-bang whizzing crazy that his mere existence itself makes for a fabulous bio. The "Giants of Science" series has a way of making anyone and everyone it touches look interesting. But with Mr. Newton, it sure doesn't seem like they needed much help.

He was born on Christmas Day in 1642 in rural England. An unwanted child, Isaac was shuttled amongst various relatives and essentially ignored by his mother and stepfather. In fact, his stepfather was so against Isaac's mere existence that the marriage contract was careful to state that the boy was not allowed even allowed in the man's home. The boy grew up solitary and unendingly curious. He worked for an apothecary at one point, attended Cambridge, and was incredibly religious. He was also, "secretive, vindictive, withdrawn, obsessive, and, oh, yes, brilliant". With a bit of historical panache, Krull brings Newton's life into powerful focus. Whether he was erasing all memory of his deceased enemies, staring at the sun in "experiments", fearing any and all forms of publication, or just making the lives of those around him just a little bit difficult, Newton made up in smarts what he lacked in charm.

Aw, man. This title's good. Heck, even the science in this book makes sense. And what small passages don't make sense are easily skipped by those readers who wish to learn more about the kind of guy who'd poke things into his eyes for experiments. Having recently finished Joan Dash's Benjamin Franklin biography, "A Dangerous Engine", which consisted of wading through deep tracts of scientific jargon, Isaac Newton's calculus comes across like clarification incarnate.

What I liked most about this book, however, was how much I never knew about this familiar name. For example, Newton's fear of publication was one of the more interesting aspects to his personality. He didn't want to publish any of his ideas for fear of someone stealing them. On the other hand, he was absolutely incensed if anyone came up with an idea even a bit close to one of his own theories. In this way, Newton comes across as a spoiled selfish child. He has lots of pretty toys to play with, but he doesn't want anyone to borrow any of them, even for a little while. He was not prepared for the "sharing-and-getting-feedback part of science", as Krull puts it. In fact he was so protective that even when he wanted to prove he'd invented calculus first, he explained it in a letter in code. A code that only he had the key to. You can imagine how well THAT went down.

Krull is, by the way, the queen of the fabulous child-friendly bio. If you've not had a chance to read one of her "Lives of the ... " books, consider yourself truly wretched. What sets her apart from other biographers is that she always seems to have the child reader foremost in her mind. As such, these bios become truly interesting, even when their subject is not. Best of all, she's not one of those biographers that wade about knee deep in speculation, rumor, and hearsay just to fill a few pages. Isaac Newton could have been gay, you say? Perhaps, but while Krull will mention the theory she'll do so in a way that makes it clear that we have no hard evidence one way or another on the matter. How could we when it was such a dangerous thing to be, back in the 1600s? The book even brings up the occasional contemporary reference as well. When Isaac first comes to Cambridge, Krull compares what he must have felt to, "the thrill that entering Hogwarts School was to the young Harry Potter". Clear as crystal, that feeling. And when Newton is at last in charge of the Royal Society? Krull describes his reign as "slimy", and no word could possibly be better suited to his actions.

And none of what I've mentioned even touches on how Newton used to work long and hard on alchemy, or served in Parliament and never said a word, or even how he only did so-so in school. With Ms. Krull to guide us, the reader sees both the good and the bad in this brilliant man. If nothing else, this book would be well-worth considering since it shows that you can be a genius and a jerk all at the same time. Brilliance does not preclude nastiness. As scientific bios go, this is a top notch addition to any and all libraries. Perhaps the finest children's biography of Newton ever conceived. Top drawer! Top drawer.

Just the facts, ma'am!

This book is an easy to read biography of Newton, in a conversational style that appeals. But I was quite turned off by the gossipy content of Chapter Nine (Newton versus Newton). First, it begins a discussion about Newton having emotional/psychological issues with the flippant and insensitive phrase "several slices short of a loaf".
Then it goes on to speculate that Newton may have been gay, since he had at least two very close male friends, one of whom he lived with for 20 years. It grants that there is no concrete evidence, but whispers about it anyhow.
I gave this book to Goodwill and went looking for something more factual and less vacuous.

Awesome series!

My thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for allowing me to read and review an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest review.

So after I read "Stoked", I was totally on board Team Tyler. Like, I could've been voted president, that's how pro-Tyler I was. And I thought Jess was being extremely unfair by breaking things off with him just for keeping the whole snowboarding/parole arrangement thing secret. But that was all before I met Kaleb. And man, after reading "Epic", I can totally understand Jess's dilemma. Choosing between these two guys would be a nightmare! I have no idea what direction Lark O'Neal is going to take this series, but either way, I just have to find out!

Not only are the characters in this series fantastic, the setting is too. I've always wanted to travel to New Zealand, but realistically, that is not going to happen for quite some time. Seeing New Zealand through Jess' eyes, and with Kaleb as her tour guide, I could clearly picture everything from the cities to the beaches and vineyards she visited. It was a truly wonderful reading experience!

There's a bit of a mystery surrounding Jess' past. She does not remember much of her childhood in New Zealand, and wants very much to find out why her mother took her from her father and moved them across the world to the States. While this part of the story takes a backseat to the romance/love triangle aspect, it was present enough to make me curious and want Jess to find all her answers in "Brilliant".

In short, if you love the New Adult genre and haven't discovered the "Going the Distance" series by Lark O'Neal yet, get your butt in gear! I don't think you'll regret it!

An Epic second book!

I read. A lot. But every so often? A book comes along that I get lost in the pages of. That I devour, and am so submerged in the world that the author has created that I don't want to leave. Lark O'Neal (pseudonym for beloved Barbara O'Neal) does that, in the most beautiful of ways.

I stumbled upon the Going The Distance series with Stoked (#1.5) back in Febraury. I didn't realize it was a novella, nor that it was sandwiched in between the two fabulous books at first. But I was sucked in none the less. I loved Tyler, and I fell in love with Jess as I read their story in Random - although I have to admit I always had an extra special place for Tyler, and Jess just came along for the ride.
Book #2 is Jess's side of the story in Stoked. And let me tell you - that brings out a billion emotions in me. I am giving this book a coveted 5 stars because it was incredibly well written, and because in the moments where I forgot about Tyler (which wasn't nearly as much as Jess, apparently?) I was so submersed in the story of Jess and Kaleb that I loved it. O'Neal has a way with words, a way that has captured my heart so fully. Her worlds are so vivid, so magical. And her characters so real that sometimes it hurts.

I want to hate Kaleb. I want to hate Jess. And I still want to wring Tyler's neck for not being open with Jess. (Although I can't blame this all on him - she is stubborn, and annoying and just plain a pain in the butt sometimes!) But that's what makes a good book, right? The emotions that it evokes?

And of course, we leave with no more resolution than we did after Stoked. In fact? I am even less sure of what's going to happen - and that is going to drive me absolutely insane until Brilliant comes out in December!

Favorite in the series so far!!!

So far, this is my favorite book in this series. I loved the setting in New Zealand and Jess's father. I think it's a testament to the author's skill that I still LIKE all the characters, considering the rollercoaster Jess has been on throughout the story and usually in a triangle there's one person who has the advantage.

I can't wait for the next book to see what happens between Jess, Kaleb, and Tyler!

Nice chemistry book

Great book in industrial organic chemistry. It presents cases on how several problems were solved when going "from the flask to the tank" (wow, that's a beatiful phrase).
-Organic chemists will be pleased it has no numbers or equations, just reaction steps, yields and plain text.
-Industrial chemists will find themselves amused by the rational and systematic approach taken with each case and the diversity of problems expalined.
-Chemical engineers will be frustrated for the lack of information on the final industrial processes.

Process development is generally not taught in schools. However it is the everyday practice of many industrial chemists. The book is really helpful in bridging these two quite different aspects of organic synthesis. It describes the issues, problems, and solutions in scale-up. THEY PRACTICED WHAT THEY PREACHED

Sometime between 1970 and 1975, my family and I spent a week with friends who lived in Falmouth, on Cape Cod. Because one of our friends was a Marine Biologist at Wood's Hole Oceanographic Institute and worked with John Teal, one of the authors of this book, we were lucky enough to attend a Fourth of July Celebration at the Teal's farm.
John and Mildred had purchased a colonial era Cape Cod farmhouse and the hundred or so acres that surrounded it. Other than hot and cold running water, electricity and natural gas, and a slightly modernized kitchen (i.e. the stove used gas rather than burning wood), the house looked much as it had when it had been built.
As might be expected, the Teal's Independence Day celebration was ecologically sound and reflected the era in which the farmhouse was built. The children got rides on one of the more tame domesticated goats, the women competed in tossing a rolling pin for distance and accuracy, and the men tried out old fashioned farm implements. The food was prepared from hand gathered and harvested local foods. For instance we had mussel salad made from mussels that I had help gather the day before. There were cranberries from one of the Cape's cranberry bogs, and quahogs and oysters dug up just long enough ago to let them naturally filter out the sand.
The point of all this is that the Teals believed in and acted on the ecological and preservationist principles that they espoused in their book. In LIFE AND DEATH OF THE SALT MARSH, they do a wonderful job of discussing how a salt marsh is formed, how long it takes, and how ecologically fragile it is. They make the point that man can, and does, destroy in a decade or less what it has taken nature centuries to build. Since, as they point out, the salt marshes play an important part in nature's food chain and ultimately in the life cycles of many species, when we damage or destroy these natural habitats, the consequences can be disastrous.
If we all could live a little more like the Teals were living, our children and their children might still have some of nature's bounty left to enjoy in future years.
It is my opinion that this is one of those books that ought to be compulsory reading for every thinking human being.

A few feet above high tide from Maine to Florida

The book promotes an awareness of the salt marsh ... from glacial history to the hunting of doughbirds (Eskimo curlews). Though salt marshes don't have high species diversity, the Teal's cover the range from Spartina and Juncus plants (and sawgrass in Florida), to the economically important Blue Crabs, to annoying insects like greenheads and deerfly. From the salt marsh detritus, is the nutrient soup that becomes the basis for the shrimp and mullet we love to eat.
The Teals also offer conservation ideas. When the book was written (1969), DDT was not yet banned. The chapter on mosquito control is enlightening ... and with the occurrence of West Nile Virus, there will be more pressure on mosquito control, so one hopes it is balanced. The history of marsh destruction in Boston is illustrative. The good news is that in the 1950's the rate of coastal wetland loss was about 46,000 acres/year, but today it is around 20-25,000 per year. Unfortunately pressures of coastal development continue. This book helps me feel lucky to live near Florida "Big Bend" with large stretches of Gulf salt marsh from the Ochlockonee River south to St. Petersburg.

Life and Death of the Salt Marsh. Teal, John and Mildred. Atlantic Monthly Press, Boston. 1969.
Life and Death of the Salt Marsh is a book that focuses on many aspects of the ecology of the salt marsh. To quote the authors, it is "about the marshes of the East Coast of North America: how they were formed; why they continue to exist; the interplay of plants and animals; and the effect of that influential animal, man." This book does a very thorough job of covering all these topics. It begins with the story of one particular salt marsh, how it formed, what happened to it when colonists first arrived and used it for hay production, and its eventual death after human impact became so great as to prevent marsh recovery. The remainder of the book gives detailed descriptions of the processes and organisms that affect the salt marsh. These include the geology, history of glaciation, plant and animal species, seasons, and topics relating to marsh pollution and conservation. Considering that this book was written in 1969, thirty years ago, it still seems to have good scientific accuracy. The details concerning the geology and species of the marsh probably have not changed much in the past thirty years. The dominant species of the salt marsh are the Spartina grasses. These grasses were often gathered as feed for livestock during early settlement. Many birds make there home in the salt marsh and were often hunted for food. It is interesting to look at this book from a historical perspective, especially the sections on conservation. Preservation of marshes is important for many reasons. The main reason for preservation being that a large variety of species rely on salt marshes during part or all of their life cycle. Many of these species are commercially viable and are (or were when the book was written) important to the East Coast economy. The chapter on pollution control was very interesting because it includes discussion of the use of DDT. Most ecologist today have heard of or read Silent Spring and know about the dangers of DDT. Life and Death of the Salt Marsh was written just before Silent Spring, by Janet Carson, and brings up the many dangers and harmful side effects of DDT. Obvious DDT was an area of concern for many people in fields related to ecology in the late 60's. It is interesting that a recommendation is made to use only minimum levels of DDT is specific areas, instead of a complete discontinuation of its use. The entire book could be related to many aspects of ecology and is thus relevant to anyone interested in the ecology of salt marshes. The first section of the book, the actual story of the life and death of a specific salt marsh, is easy to read and entertaining. It provides an overview of much of the information presented later in greater detail. I would recommend just Part 1 to any one interested in an overview of marshes and the effects of human settlement near or on them. Someone reading just this section would learn a great deal about the ecology of the salt marsh. Later sections are a bit more technical then the first and take longer to read. They do however provide very specific and useful information in a way much more enjoyable then something like a text book. These later sections should be read by anyone planning to do research in or near salt marshes. They could also be used as a reference. For example, someone interested in mosquito control problems in marshes would find it very useful to read that specific chapter. Despite the fact that this book was written 30 years ago I would still recommend it to anyone interested in marshes or other types of wetlands. The information is provided in a clear and fairly interesting manner and could be applied to other areas. At the least it is a good introduction to the many interrelating aspects of an ecosystem and why they should all be considered before destroying or preserving an area.
