About the Author
James R. Gillespie has extensive training and experience in the field of livestock production and agricultural education. He received his BS and MS degrees in Agricultural Education from Iowa State University and holds a degree as an Education Specialist in School Administration from Western Illinois University in Macomb, Illinois. Now retired, he was employed by the Illinois State Board of Education, as a Regional Vocational Administrator. Mr. Gillespie is a member of Phi Delta Kappa and the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Almost Excellent!

It's a fairly good book. However, I was disappointed to see mostly traditional commercial breeds mentioned ... Several farmers have heritage or special breeds which has a place and demand in the modern market: Americana chickens for colourful eggs, Lowline Angus and the Holland White turkeys, Kiko and Myotonic goats to name a few. Some information is deserving of skepticism as it is the first piece of literature I've ever seen to credit a breed of goat other than the Saanen with the highest average milk production. It didn't explore dairy practices in detail with respect to goats however I suppose all the principles found in dairy cattle production which not everyone is interested in may enlighten the reader. Why horses are considered livestock still puzzles me but took a fair number of pages leaving chicken breeds under-examined. All breeds highlighted should have informed the reader on weight and any others specifics. Lastly, this book is not universal although carrying general principles and concepts it was definitely written for the U.S! Again, a good book and could be a global text if not so western cultured.

Great book, but expensive as all hell

This is a really good, thorough livestock book. It covers more than a vet tech student will ever need to know about food animal production.

Having said all that, it's way too expensive for a mostly black and white book printed on cheap paper that's one step above newsprint in quality.

The only way someone would fork over 140 bucks for this thing is if they were forced to by an instructor.

If you have to spend 140 bucks on a damned textbook, at least this is a good one.
