Outstanding effort

Hornung presents us with a fascinating wealth of Egyptian lore. The texts present in the book are fully translated into layman's English, and almost all portions are followed with the copies of the accompinying reliefs and frescoes. This is a magnificent work that allows the reader, whatever his background, to gain some insight into the oft-misunderstood religion of the Ancient Egypt.

Difficult Summary

Hornung takes a fascinating topic and renders it fairly dry and academic, but that's probably his purpose here. Unfortunately, everything is touched on only sketchily, so that you only get tantalizing hints without any real depth.
I will likely have to get a second resource now since this was too general for my purposes. It was, however, wonderfully illustrated, and is probably a great 'quick guide' if you need some information fast.

This is STILL a wonderful laboratory manual

This is a wonderful laboratory manual. In regards to other people's reviews... this is NOT meant to be a replacement for the textbook. It is difficult to read by itself but if you read the actual textbook and follow along with the laboratory manual, it makes perfect sense! And the answers are available on Evolve's website. Just follow the instructions on the inside flap of the manual. I highly recommend this laboratory manual to help with retaining the information in the actual textbook. It may be redundant a bit, but redundancy has been shown to help with cognitive memory.

After contacting Evolve Customer Support, I have been informed that the answers to the Lab Manual's exercises are only available in the Instructor's resources. The answers that you can access are for the Test Yourself Questions in the textbook, not the lab manual. I still highly recommend this lab manual because it does help reiterate things for me. If you want the answers to the Lab Manual exercises, please contact your instructor. Or you could just take a bit more time and recheck your work to see if you are correct.

Horrible!!! Why do you not warn people that pages cannot be printed. I spent $30 on a manual I cannot complete and submit. I need a hard cover book. Or a digital copy that I can print and submit on a PDF. This makes sense on textbooks not manuals. BS!!!!!!!! I want my money back so I can afford a copy I can actually use.

To aid the study of Abhidhamma, this book follows the axiomatic approach of Abhidhamma but also tries to put concepts, such as bhavanga, the five-door cognitive process, and the jhana cognitive process, into practical contexts. To aid practice, two serenity meditations (Mindfulness of Breathing and the Four Elements meditation), as well as a moment-to-moment insight meditation, are presented.

A Masteful Exposition on Abhidhamma and Meditation

Sayalay Susila's book presents a survey of the Abhidhamma and its practical application to meditation; it is this unique combination of the two in a clear and concise manner that makes it stand out from other dharma books. Due to this unique approach, I don't know that there is another book with which it can be directly compared. I highly recommend this book.

Part One "The Four Truths" goes through the details of Abhidhamma, with sections on consciousness, cognitive processes, karma and its results, mental factors, matter and Nirvana. This section alone will make the book a worthwhile addition to the library of anyone interested in the Theravada Abhidhamma.

Part Two "The Cycle of Birth and Death" details the processes of death and rebirth, building on the material on cognitive processes from the previous section, and concludes with section on dependent origination.

Part Three "The Escape" deals with actual meditative practices, with sections on the Noble Eightfold Path, serenity meditation, four element meditation (a practice rarely taught in the west)and insight meditation, all building on the framework put together in the first two parts of the book.

A complicated subject, simplified and readable

Using her extensive knowledge of a subject often considered complicated and impenetrable, the author draws out the essence of the Abhidhamma, the core teachings of the Buddha, in this important book. Presented in straightforward, easy-to-read language with simple analogies and clear anecdotes, the book is equally suitable for beginning meditators as well as those who have followed the Buddha's path for many years.

Although easily read, the book is perhaps most valuable as a study manual, a reference that answers many of the detailed questions that naturally arise as one progresses upon the Noble Eightfold Path. Beginners might naturally progress more slowly through the material, while an advanced meditator who has read and studied the Satipatthana Sutta and longed to understand the details behind this and other suttas will certainly appreciate the analytical nature and direct style in which the material is presented.
